London 2012 Olympic Games: Student Leadership Event
On Wednesday 7th October 2009 we took students from Years 7 to 11 to Oxted School for a Student Leadership event. At the heart of the vent was an aspiration to develop the leadership skills of our students by encouraging them to lead on London 2012 Games activities at Harris Academy Falconwood.
To support this aspiration, the aims of the event were:
• To ensure that young people and teachers are better informed about the history and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movements.
• To raise consciousness about the potential to use the London 2012 Games to enhance student achievement and to foster personal and social development.
• For students to develop some initial plans to sue the Olympic and Paralympic values to support the raising of achievement at Harris Academy Falconwood.
In addition, our students were lucky enough to meet Paralympic Judo Champion Ben Quilter who is partially sighted, came fifth at the Beijing Olympics and is the present European Silver medallist. Ben gave an inspirational talk about how he has overcome his own disability and the dedication required to achieve success. All of the students present came away with many ideas which we hope can be used in HAF in the lead up to the 2012 Games.
