English

“English is the language of the future, the language of the computer.  English is the most important tool you’ll ever need, no matter what career you choose.”
Benjamin Zephaniah, Poet, Writer, Actor

English at Harris is a dynamic and creative subject. Our overall objective is to ensure students achieve their full potential, providing them with the tools they need to succeed in their future careers. The English faculty takes pride in the relationships they share with students and believe that every student is entitled to fun, interactive and motivational lessons.

KS3

Over the course of KS3 students study a wide range of texts including Shakespeare, poetry, novels and media. Students are taught in streamed groups. The lessons are differentiated to include all students and to ensure each individual is challenged. Each area of KS3 aims to ease transition into KS4 by helping our students to become more independent, analytical and enthusiastic.

KS4

During KS4 students study a variety of topics within English Literature and English Language. Topics include Shakespeare, poetry, drama and media which all provide students with necessary opportunities to cover reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. Each skill contributes towards their final qualification and lifelong learning.

KS5

In KS5 students study a range of literature from across the literary canon. In year 12 they complete two pieces of coursework based on the Struggle for Modern Identity. If students continue onto A2 they move on to study heritage literature such as Dickens, Austen and Shakespeare.
