History

KS3

In KS3 History, students are given an opportunity to learn about the world we live in today, through investigating key events and periods in the past.  We teach pupils how to study History and ask challenging questions about the past.

In Year 7 the students learn all about the Norman Conquest, the Medieval world, the Tudors, Stuarts and how medicine has developed through time.  They investigate the following key questions  and more.  Why did William win the Battle of Hastings?  Was King John a good or a bad King?   Why did the English execute their King?

In Year 8 the students learn about the Industrial Revolution, Jack the Ripper, the British Empire and Black peoples of the Americas.  They investigate the following key questions and more.  Why did the Industrial revolution take place?  Were the police incompetent in not catching Jack the Ripper?  Was the British Empire a good or a bad thing?

In Year 9 the students learn about the Suffragettes, WW1, the rise of Hitler and the Cold War.  They investigate the following key questions and more.  Was Emily Davison’s death an accident or suicide?  Who burned down the Reichstag?  How accurate was the WW1 propaganda?

By the end of KS3 our students have a good understanding of some of the key events and people who have lived and had an impact on Britain and the world over the last 1000 years

KS4

At KS4 we study a modern world course.  The History GCSE is both a challenging and respected GCSE which is favoured by colleges and employers.  It is also extremely interesting covering some of the key events of the last 100 years.  There are two exam topics.  Firstly International Relations 1900-39, including the Causes of WW1, the Treaty of Versailles, the failure of the League of Nations and the road to WW2.  Secondly students also study USA 1919-41 looking at the Roaring 20’s, the Great Depression and Race Relations in the USA.  25% of the course is an extended piece of controlled assessment completed in class for which the students focus on Conflicts in the 20th Century.  We also offer a residential trip to Berlin to broaden and deepen the students understanding of the course.

KS5

At KS5 students study two different units.  In Unit 1 they study Russia 1881-1953, which covers the downfall of the Tsars, the rise of Communism and the dictatorship of Stalin.  In Unit 2 they study India 1900-47, which charts the slow handing over of power from the British Raj to the Indian Nationalists and the growth of support for the nationalists through the work of figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammed Ali Jinnah.  Students also try to unpick why India ended up in bloody religious war between the Hindus and the Muslims.
