HARRIS ACADEMY FALCONWOOD STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT GLOBAL CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES IN RISK MANAGEMENT

Sixth form students at Harris Academy Falconwood are to gain an insight into risk management this week with a learning session about careers in the insurance profession.

The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), the insurance sector’s professional body, will visit the Harris Falconwood on Wednesday 8 June to give the 16-18 year olds more information on the huge range of global opportunities that exist in the profession.

Working with local companies, the visit is part of the CII’s Discover Risk initiative and aims to show students that a career in insurance is about assessing elements of risk that are vital for people and businesses to manage.

Amongst other activities, students took part in an interactive game, with each team participating in a scenario-based activity where risk is an issue. The types of problems faced by the would-be risk managers will include a pop singer losing her voice on tour, cameras being damaged on a movie set and piracy affecting a company’s profits.

Mrs Divakaran, Assistant Principal at the Academy, said: “The interactive session will really capture the imaginations of our students and is an excellent way to introduce students to a progressive and respected profession in a way that will hold their interest. The game will allow us to discuss broader topics about career progression later on.”

Caspar Bartington, relationship manager at the CII, added: “The Discover Risk activity is a great way for young people to understand more about what’s on offer in the risk profession and to develop important skills such as teamwork, influence, negotiation and communication.

“We’re convinced that through these sessions we’re starting to identify some of our profession’s future stars.”
