Homework & Remote Learning

Homework is important for students to develop independent study and good learning habits. Research also shows that homework benefits factual knowledge, self discipline, attitudes to learning and problem solving skills. All of the above are essential for the educational growth of our students as they progress to GCSE and beyond.

 

We have based our homework on the same principles at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4:

• All subjects have POWERFUL KNOWLEDGE that needs to be learned

• Memorising the powerful knowledge means students can use their working memory to apply that knowledge to classroom and exam questions

• Students should have a chance to apply the knowledge they have memorised to questions.

 

All homework is set retrospectively; students are revising and applying knowledge that has been learned in class already.

 

All students also receive online homework for Maths on Sparx Maths. this is set and checked weekly and should take an hour on average. 

 

Key stage 3

 

Every half term students receive a booklet with all their paper homework for that half term. They receive homework for every subject, in proportion to how often they have lessons in that subject, on a rota.

This is a suggested timetable, to help students manage their homework throughout the week.

 

Each piece of homework comprises of 3 different sections: Memorise, Recall and Practise.

 

Memorise this: Students have a few key definitions given to them, and need to memorise these by self testing using their homework books.

 

Recall this: Students have to complete definitions that were set as memorise this tasks in previous homeworks.

 

Practise this: Students use the knowledge in the Memorise and Recall sections to answer a few short questions.

 

Homework is checked for completion in the final Morning Read session of the week, and answers are provided in lessons in the following week.

 

Key stage 4

 

In Year 10 and 11 there is a higher demand of the Independent Learning students complete in order to prepare them for the rigours of public exams.

 

Students receive an Independent Learning booklet from every subject that covers a half term of tasks.

 

Each week they have:

• Flashcards- The powerful knowledge they need to be successful in that subject

• Practice questions- applying the knowledge to short answer or exam questions

 

Students should be completing a minimum of one page of Independent Learning for every subject, each week.

 

For Year 10, Independent Learning is checked in the final Morning session of the week, and for Year 11 in their Monday Study Hall session.
