Citizenship

Citizenship studies investigates how the citizen is enabled by society to play a full and active part and how citizens are empowered to effect change within society. Citizenship understanding develops through the knowledge of how a society operates and functions and its underlying values.

Students at HAF will spend time examining a range of political and social topics of relevance to the modern world. This broad and deep curriculum offer has been purposefully designed to help prepare all of our young people for their eventual entry into adulthood, and give them the powerful knowledge that they will need in order to play a full part in their communities and wider society.

The intent of the Citizenship curriculum at HAF is to give our students the skills that they need in order to understand and engage in social and political debate. In order to become full active citizens equipped with the skills they need to participate in these discussions, it is vital that all are able to recognise a range of subject-specific vocabulary. These tier 3 terms would not normally be encountered in other parts of the school curriculum offer. To support our pupils in this, there will be a key focus on developing their literacy throughout KS3 and KS4. Vocabulary ladders for each term are designed to support learners and help them build their understanding over time so that by the end of KS3, they have a high degree of political literacy.

The curriculum is also continually evolving to meet changing national and global contexts. As the political and social agenda continues to be reshaped, so is our curriculum. This is vital so that all Citizenship students can understand the relevance of the subject, and apply their learning to real-world events.
